George Stephenson was born on 9 June 1781 in Wylam, Northumberland. He was the second child of Robert and Mabel Stephenson, neither of whom could read or write.At age 17, Stephenson became an engineman at Water Row Pit Newburn. Then as George grew up he realized the value of education. He payed for night school. George learned how to read, write, and, arithmetic, George was illiterate until that age of 18. so there was no money for schooling. George married a woman named Frances Henderson,
